Dye-sensitized solar cells

Dye-sensitized solar cells utilize a mechanism in which electric power is generated when light shines on the dye. Dyes are used to convert light into electricity, and since the color of the solar cell is determined by the color of the dye used, they are the most important materials contributing to the cell performance. High-performance, stable ruthenium complex is the dye used in these cells.

Manufacturing processes for dye-sensitized solar cells do not require large-scale facilities such as expensive vacuum equipment and clean rooms, and the electrodes for dye-sensitized solar cells can be easily printed under ambient environments. These features enable significantly lower manufacturing costs compared to currently widespread crystalline silicon solar cells.

Not only can the color of the cells be freely changed by adjusting the dye color, but thin, lightweight and flexible solar cell modules can also be fabricated by using substrates with organic films, and a comparatively high conversion efficiency can be achieved even with indoor light. For this reason, design-oriented applications such as attachment to the surface of windows, clothes and portable electronic devices are developments to be expected in the future.

CYC series

CYC series dyes are ruthenium complex dyes developed by Professor Chun-Guey Wu and others at the National Central University, Taiwan. These dyes have the world's highest level photon-to-current conversion efficiency. They also exhibit excellent conversion efficiency even with a thin titanium oxide layer, which enables thinner products and lower cost materials.

DX series

DX series dyes are ruthenium complex dyes developed by Professor Hiroshi Segawa and others at the University of Tokyo. They enable even greater efficiency by combining dye-sensitized solar cells, manufactured using CYC series dyes with the perovskite solar cells that have been attracting a lot of attention over recent years so that they can also achieve photon-to-current conversion of light in the near infrared region.

DX1

Tandem cells combining CYC and DX series dyes

Tandem dye-sensitized solar cells enable even greater efficiency by using CYC series dyes in the top cell and DX series dyes in the bottom cell.Efficient photon-to-current conversion is achieved by using CYC dyes for 400–600 nm visible light and DX dyes for wavelengths of over 600 nm.
